Dearborn Company Stories – Silverymoon Chapter (McP)

Here are the adventures from March 16th, 2019 of the Silverymoon chapter of Dearborn Company, a bi-monthly D&D group that meets every other week in McPherson, Kansas.
Matt Cotton
The services of Dearborn members Bulgol, Sona, Warden, Vargach, Rolen, and new recruit Kay were called upon to assist the investigation of the mysterious death of a local magistrate who was currently prosecuting a case against the son of a Silverymoon crime boss known as The Ox. The case had both the Silverwatch and the city’s Spell Guard stumped: a large creature had somehow targeted the Magistrate in his chambers on the third floor of a well-defended courthouse. More curious still, the creature’s trail began and ended abruptly, as if conjured by magical means, despite summoning magics being disrupted within the walls of the city. What’s more, the magistrate’s personal bodyguard, a member of the spell guard, had also been missing since the afternoon prior to the assault. Though the company suspected that the priest at the adjacent church of Shantae may have seen something, Father Edron proved to be an uncooperative (and very inebriated) witness.
After relaying the information of the case to Quartermaster Jory, who thought the creature’s description to match that of a “Shadowcat” (displacer beast), the party was issued temporary magic weapon licenses and were equipped with special weapons designed to hunt such creatures. As the party geared up, news came from the crime scene: after getting thoroughly sloshed on the ale gifted to him by Bulgol (and his mule, Bartender), Father Edron had confessed that he had in fact seen an assassin with the beast, and that the same man had attempted to silence him in his own church. While the magical barriers that warded the priest’s confessional booth had been enough to thwart the assassin’s initial attempt, he promised that the priest that he would be dead by nightfall. Father Edron described the assailant as having “a face as pale as the moon” and “horns like a devil of the Nine Hells.” Based on this description, several party members feared they had once more run into the elusive Bathory, and proceeded with extreme caution.
It was decided to use Father Edron (or rather, Warden disguised as Edron) to draw out the assassin. The party lay in wait, and at dusk pretended to move Edron from his church to holding cells of the courthouse, which would be more secure. Sure enough, before Warden as Edron could cross the square, a local orphan ran up and handed him a note. As he read the note, a magical rune activated and a shadowy mark etched itself into his forehead, marking him as the intended target. No sooner had the mark appeared that a cloud of smoke suddenly appeared in the center of the square, and from it sprang the beast, dead set on killing Warden. The party sprang into action, using Faerie Fire to illuminate both the creature and his Tiefling master from within the smokescreen. Warden stood toe-to-to with the beast, and with the support of his comrades was able to drive it back (losing consciousness only twice). After wearing the monster down, Rolen struck a bullseye (or in this case, a Shadowcatseye) with a sleep dart, dropping the beast into a deep slumber. Bulgol, after healing Warden’s wounds, slipped him a Potion of Growth to make sure he could finish the job. Meanwhile, Vargach, Sona, and Kay set off in pursuit of the Tiefling, who fled into a nearby park. The pursuers had a running battle with the assassin, as spells, javelins, and crossbow bolts ripped through the air. Sona’s familiar, a Pseudodragon named Phillip, gave pursuit by air, only to be confronted by the assassin’s own familiar, a wyrmling seemingly made of pure shadow. Phillip valiantly tried to stop the assailant from escaping, but was cut down, though not before sending a message to his master, that the warlock was headed into the city’s sewers.
In the sewers, the party found a makeshift dwelling, where it seems the assassin had been living for some time. As they investigated, they found that he had been stalking his mark and planned his attack carefully, but before they could learn more the dwelling and its contents magically vanished, and they were attacked by Shadows. Vargach was incapacitated by the shadow’s strength-draining touch, and Bulgol almost fell as well struggling to get his friend to safety. As the shadows were dealt with, a new threat of a Gelatinous cube moving through the tunnels had the party trapped, but they were able to locate the key to a nearby grate and escape into the sewer main, which led out to the banks of the river. It is clear the assassin fled this way as well, but had vanished into the heavy fog that hung across the water that night. There are many questions left unanswered about the mysterious assassin and how he bypassed the city’s summoning restrictions, but both the guild and the city authorities were impressed by our heroes’ performance. By deducing that the assassin was male, they realized that the shadowy figure behind the attack was not Bathory, but a new threat entirely. However, his pet Shadowcat’s head will be mounted and hung in the Great Hall of the guild, and the tales of Dearborn’s exploits in the city continue to grow.

Momond, Freyja, Caeldrim, Ater, Druindar, and Ellasarah all took on a escort mission for a wealth merchant lord of silvermoon Tarune (Deals both in normal and black market). He needed a wagon which was built to carry something massive inside had something magically sealed inside. After some preparation they headed to Yartar by land (not a great town to be in based off reputation). They made great time on the first phase of the journey making it to a small town of Everlund. As the party entered the town a nasty thunderstorm system hit and rained well through the night. However their entrance into Everlund was not unnoticed by which a gang decided to try and take the wagon from the party. After a small fight Ellasarah took a nasty arrow to be saved by the quick thinking Ater. During the fight they killed 1 of the 4 with 1 getting away. 2 other where knocked out from damage. Caeldrim found an arrow with a message for the party telling them that the blood would be theirs one way or another signed Daryun. Later Momond did the questioning/torture. 1 died and then 1 was tied to a mule “Daisy” as they made their way out of town onward of their target area. The roads where extremely slow going. They had a few skrims with gnolls but they where out gunned and downed them faster than they could get close and just stayed away after a few fights. Their journey stopped with some broken wheels outside the city about 1/2 a days travel. After they entered the city they had a small discussion and ended up moving to the central town square where they tried to have a public auction. A few merchants had gotten together and where biding amoung themselves about who would offer the most and hit a good high when they just said screw it and left. The party feeling a little down that the excitement crashed at a hault where meet by a cloaked figure who was part of the merchant Tarunes group.
As they got into the warehouse where they where to drop off the shipment they figured out what it was they where hauling. The mage revealed a White wyrmling dragon who was fairly pissed off. The other carts of the same size showed 1 dragon of a different color as well. There where 5 in total and they where all chromatic. After a good payment they where engaged by Daryun who told them he has come for the blood. At which time he dropped down from a walkway, destroyed a cage/barrier, and slaughtered the blue in 1 strike along with using his shield to drink the blue bloods dry. Then as the party was trying to find a way out and discussing the problem at hand he claimed the Reds life and blood. He would try the blacks but a key spell from Ellasarah saved his life from his first swing. The party at this point is starting to engage him, and brake the jails of the white. They get it free while Daryun slaughtered the green while it was bound in its cage as well. The black would fall soon after and the party had just started to graze and distract Daryun. Feeling threatened by him the white took off to the upper part of the building’s roof top that it could reach only to be feel’d soon after Daryun caught him. Killing him with a single blow he followed him to the ground and finished the final blood drain. Doing that jump he took his focus off the group for that split second and the group all engaged him in that split second doing a heavy amount of damage or so they thought. He hit the ground with one knee but stood up and brushed it off as if it was a mere breeze instead of a hurricane the party thought they dished out. He did how ever leave quickly after words leaving a bad taste in this adventure

Finally, we’ve received a break in the case of the Dread Wolf! Returning operatives Thrash, Giggett, and Malik were joined this week by Masura and Dex, both dragonborn that are a bad and a Ranger respectively. These five were tasked with interviewing a few suspect archers with the required talent to be the masked killer from a list compiled and given to the Company by the local watch. On arriving at the first suspect’s house they found the door had been kicked in. Inside and around back they found a scene of bloody carnage as it appeared that the subject of the interview had been attacked in his home and murdered. Our agents managed to apprehend all of the killers and turn them in to the guard.

At headquarters they learned from Guildmaster Tsiya that a number of other teams he had dispatched to interview suspects from the list had been attacked, a few had gotten away unscathed, but many had been found dead. Two things were decided at this point, first that some affected party had put some sort of contract out on the members of the list, probably in hopes of killing the Dread Wolf, which lead to the second decision, somebody within the watch had leaked the suspect list to the criminal element. At this point Tsiya revealed that his one-time traveling companion and former Dearborn operative, one Tel’abelas Halam’shivanas, was listed as one of the prime suspects in the case. Tsiya claims that he personally handled Tel’s interview and cleared his friend of all suspicions, but that this would have been after the leak. Tsiya dispatched our agents to meet another companion of his, the half-orc cook Kharag, whom Tsiya had tasked some time back with locating Tel’abelas as he had been particularly difficult to locate. Kharag led our group to one of Tel’s local safehouses where aside from a minor altercation with some animated books, and a particularly fatal trap concealed in the form of an Ancient red Dragon’s skull mounted within a trophy room, they were allowed to explore the obviously enchanted home relatively safely. When Tel’abelas finally returned to his home it seems he was ambushed outside and the attackers were all vanquished.
At this point Kharag confronted Tel with the knowledge that Tel’abelas was in fact the Dread Wolf, information he had reason to believe that Tsiya also possessed. Tel attempted to take advantage of a mask he possessed that was intended to protect his secret identity. Those gathered seemed satisfied that Tel was limiting his victims to people of ill intent. It remains to be seen exactly what Tsiya’s decision to keep this information from the watch will mean for the guild’s relationship with them, but at this point it seems certain to put us in a difficult position.

Dearborn Company Update (Silverymoon Chapter)

A bit of a backlog update, these are the adventures that took place on March 2nd, 2019 at The Village Geek in McPherson, Kansas (Silverymoon Chapter)

Ty Gill

Tel rounded up a group of adventures together and sent them out on a mission to see what’s happening in Sundabar a town to the east of Silvermoon. Their main economy being from multiple mines and all they had a odd request to just come and help them rid a group of bandits. Human rogue- Jaquen, Human Bard- Zora, Human Paladin- James, Tiefling Paladin- Dee Livvy, & Dragonborn Figther- Red set out on the mornning and had no issues. As night fell they saw a black cloaked rider moving at top speed towards their direction they where heading. As the night went on they didn’t find or have any other surprises but 1 shadow man.

As the group went forward down the road around midday they realized the shadow was following and made a stop to try to find out the shadows intent. After a few attacks and some crazy yelling from Dee Livvy they finally figured out it was more an illusion casted on them to divert their attention from other things while making them invis to the world. They then reached the town where they found a pretty run down town. There for sure has been better days around this town. The locals didn’t really have the happy go lucky emotions flying but they weren’t sad and in despair. After meeting with the mayor and finding out how might be the person behind the shadow with no hard proof other than heresay. They made logging for the night.

After gathering information about the location, how people where treated and other fun and exciting facts (more or less about the drakes running round). Red got the idea to use her rogue ally to steal some pure ethanol from the inn keeper that had some great powers of putting people who drink it under, but the ideal use turned it into a weapon under reds thinking (would later be used a Molotov). After information gathering and stealing they made their way to the mine to find it empty of people and most belongings except the onsite armory where they found a unusual pair of googles of night. They where preparing for a heavy fight with the drakes when a unnamed monster came to sight range but not falling for threats beckoned them into the mines farther for some entertainment.

They took the request moving into the mines in a combat file only to be greeted by no body. The main work area had been left void of anyone. There was a few passages off from this chamber and the party was cautious about moving forward. They made some really loud sounds trying to get the attention of any thing but nothing moved in on the party. They slowly rounded a corner to the second mining chamber where they found a small ore crate baracade in place with a few men behind it. They got one free round off from the cover before Red charged in and forced a battle of wits to utter defeat for the 3 half-dragon men behind there. They where slaughter and 1 did manage to get to the next area but meet his fate before long from a few deep wounds. The drakes looming threat keep the party from running after him and they slowly filed through a break in a grand craved wall in the side of the mine. As the party entered the next chamber they where meet with a HUGE chamber with a temple like structure in the middle. As the party examined the 7 pillars that was in front of a set of doors they found ancient cravings from the times of the Tear Fall and the world sundering.

After this chamber they slowly moved forward still watching for the drakes and any more hiding enemies. They had knowledge of 4 human sized men, 2 drakes, and one large half-dragon that looked more dragon than man. The next chamber was a medium room with another set of 7 pillars showing more of the same tell of AO, Asgorath, and the primordials. After getting through a huge set of doors that a large orc would only half fill they found a odd chamber lite with blue fire braziers around 6 pillars telling more of the story. They dropped a few items onto the floor only to watch them disappear. After the horror of a pervious mission they slowly tested and used the dragonborn Red to carry people over the new found “trap”. James how ever tested it with his own life on the line only to find the room was a self clean room for the reason of keeping the next chamber free of such dirt.

They entered the next chamber to find a GRAND chamber in honor of the 7 Dragon kings of old and the world tree. There stood a stone engraved with a message about the history there amoung the grand statues of said kings. The party after entering a small ways saw the Half-Dragon standing on the raised platform. He turned and said a few words while saying his name- Daryun. As he honored a verbal threat from Red, his true size and figure was now fully visible as he approached. Daryun standing roughly 14’8″ tall was a platinum half-dragon armored with what looked like a mix of Dragon Scale and Plate mail, showing a symbol of Tiamat, with a large battle-ax/hammer, and a shield. He then fought the party nearly downing a few of them with a few blows was then bought down to a knee. After that he revealed his true power by what looked like he brushed all the damage he took off and using a ring he teleported away. After he left they went to the town and had them reorganize the mine and headed back to Silvermoon. The monster known has Daryun waits for the next engagement.

3/2/19. This week members of the guild were called to the outlying town of Triboar along with guildmaster Tsiya, the Lord Protector of Triboar, one Darathra Shendrel, they were called upon to discuss the possibility of maybe working with Triboar on future endeavors. This particular case was handed to us in Silverymoon by our counterparts in Neverwinter as the guildhall there was backed up on requests. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of our guild’s agents, Tsiya took Malik Morningstar, Momond, Freyja, Vargach, and Ater all off of the Dread Wolf case, he’d been inactive for a few weeks so it looked like we had the people to spare. The presence of a pair of Dragonborn, a Lizardfolk, and a Tiefling did not escape local notice when they arrived. For once our people made good time while traveling and arrived a whole day ahead of schedule.

On arrival our people found the town of Triboar was creating a set of makeshift barricades around the local keep. It looked as though they had activated their local militia. Our agents attempted to establish contact with the Lord Protector, but her aide informed them that she was in a meeting. Some of our people intended to push their way into the meeting, which of course got the militia a little bristly, fortunately our people managed to defuse the situation before they were run out of town. I have to state that I question Tsiya’s judgment bringing demonspawn and man-eaters on a meet and greet. From there most of our people congregated at the Talking Troll, if they were trying to display the courage we instill in our people, ordering drinks from the tavern where tables are covered in bird-droppings is a good way, I suggest we outfit some of these people with magics meant to counter-act diseases in the future if this is how foolish they’re going to be. The owner of the partially burned out tavern did help our people in gathering information, for starters he told confirmed to our agents that most of the town was having trouble sleeping, which our people already suspected as most of the town was sluggish, irritable, and looked exhausted. I’m also given to understand that he roped one of our agents into “investing” in helping him renovate the place, in the EXTREMELY unlikely event that any money is delivered from the Talking Troll to the guildhall, see to it that it is redirected to Momond.

The next day our people were recalled to the local keep to officially meet Lord Protector Shendrel. During the meeting it became clear that the Lord Protector had been in contact with the Dread Wolf, and in fact the Dread Wolf was still in town, when the guildmaster attempted to arrest him however the local militia drew their weapons and another tense standoff started. It seems to me that in order to relieve the tensions in the room the Dread Wolf may have unmasked themselves, though all of our people claim they can’t remember exactly what they saw beneath his mask. Guildmaster Tsiya’s account does not entirely line up with the other operatives, if the watch ever learns of this it will not look good for the Dearborn Company. Our people also state that after the local problems were handled there was a verbal agreement that the Dread Wolf would return with our people to await trial.

Evidently the Dread Wolf suspected that the town’s trouble sleeping, along with a few local incidents were connected to the presence of a Night Hag. Over the course of the next few days our people helped to prepare the area for the inevitable encounter with the hag. At sundown on the third night they learned that their troubles were slightly more compounded as an entire coven of Night Hags were present. Our people handled themselves valiantly against creatures they called “feeders”, while Tsiya and the Dread Wolf handled the threat of the Coven of hags. According to the guildmaster, at this point the Dread Wolf broke their bargain and skipped town before they could be apprehended.

Dearborn Company Update (Neverwinter Guild)

Good day, adventurers! These are the tales of the Dungeons & Dragons Dearborn Company, hailing from the Manhattan Village Geek.

Hearing of the fabled treasure hordes of Harram the Mad, an infamous general who spent his last days locked up in his stone tower high above the swamps, some members of the Dearborn Company were ever so eager to find his vast riches. Their journey started by undergoing the three-day venture to the tower. While traveling along a forest path skirting the swamps, they encountered a ravenous and seemingly lost group of Giant Toads, setting the group in their sights as their next meal. Dispatching of the toads (while narrowly avoiding being swallowed), the party continued on, finding themselves on the edge of Harram's Swamp. After a series of near-death experiences with kamen and some gruesome Stirge smashing, the guild members finally reached The Black Tower. Realizing the tower had sunk into the swamp, burying the entrance, the party had no choice but to ascend the tower. After facing off against gray ooze, a horde of goblins, and even a mimic, our adventurers found themselves at a dead end. Suddenly, appearing from seemingly nowhere, comes a wraith, the ghost of Harram the Mad himself. After a gruelling battle with Harram and his skeleton minions, the party found the secret entrance to Harram's treasure, recovering the riches and artifacts in the name of the Dearborn Company.

Elsewhere, an oversight left a few members of the guild unable to return to the guild hall by using the teleportation circle and were thus returning by foot from a mission to rid a small village of a troll. On their way back they stopped at an inn where one of the new party members, Trinket, had a dream where a demon asked her for a favor in return for a reward. The party made their way through a forest into a local shrine to the demon that had been taken over by a wizard. In his younger years the wizard had wanted the demon to become his patron, but the demon was so unimpressed by this particular wizard and had chosen not to share his power with him, so the wizard learned magic on his own and developed a loathing for the demon.

These members made their way through the shrine playing a dice game with some animated stone statues and looting some of the rooms. They encountered a specter in a room with a shrine to the demon and some death dogs in a supply room. Eventually they made their way to the ceremony room where the wizard and two of his followers were performing a ritual that would've bound the demon to the wizard and made the demon his pet. The company members were able to stop the ceremony, kill the assistants and ultimately destroy the wizard. The demon presented each of the party members with an iron flask containing a dretch that they could call upon in their hour of need and for her service and faithfulness the Goristro offered to become the patron of young barbarian gnome Trinket. She accepted and is now a warlock.

Other members of Dearborn received a mission to locate a missing legendary spell scroll from the College of Neverwinter. It was last seen in Longsaddle and then, while scrying for its location, it vanished. The group arrived to Longsaddle and investigated a sinkhole that led to the sewers. After following a construct, they found an illusionary door that led to an underground facility filled with constructs. They beat their way through to discover a small evil gnome wizard who found a Zaratan long asleep in Longsaddle, who stole the Gate Spell, used it to teleport the Zaratan to his lair to try and control it but learned that its intelligence is too low to control. A fight ensued, they killed the wizard, and the Zaratan caused the structure to fail so the group ran out and teleported back to the Guild Hall for payment.
